American Canyon Football: Senior Night battle for 1st place in league

Officially into October, with the days getting shorter and colder we are in the thick of football season! Entering into Week 7, the Wolves football program prepares for the third week of league play against some physical opponents on all three levels.
The previously undefeated Freshman Wolves took a tough loss on the road against the undefeated San Marin Mustangs. With a rough start to the game, the Freshman Wolves found themselves down 18-0 before battling back to be narrowly defeated with the final score 36-30. The Freshman Wolves look to bounce back in their next game on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Rancho Cotate Cougars (0-5). Kickoff will begin at 6 p.m.
The JV squad soared against the Justin Sienna Junior Varsity, scoring a near-historic 63 points, with 56 of those points coming in the first half. It was decided from the first play, with Justin “Juice” Ojascastro rattling off a 36-yard run while breaking five separate tackles in the process. The drive would be capped off the very next play with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Victor Llamas to Griffin Morgan. The scoring would only continue from there, and Head Coach Brandon “KB” Henry Sr. wouldn’t slow down until the second half.
With the Varsity squad sidelined after a Justin Sienna forfeit, they had a rest and recovery week ahead of their Senior Night contest against a very physical Petaluma football team. The Petaluma Trojans Varsity team enters the game 2-1 against league opponents, and 5-2 on the year. Their offense relies on a heavy dose of the run game, putting up league high numbers on the ground with an average 377 rushing yards per game to go with 40 rushing touchdowns on the season so far. Their top rusher is a senior, #4 Evan Clark, with 988 rushing yards through seven games, and has rushed for over 100 yards in six of those games.
The Varsity Wolves defense is no slouch in the run game, however, giving up less than 100 yards rushing in three of the last five games, and not more than 150 rushing yards in any game this season. Second-year Varsity Defensive Coordinator Michael Chisley feels his defense is up to the challenge, stating, “Our gameplan every week is to stop the run and force the offense into favorable situations for us. This week is even more emphasized, especially with the type of offense we’re going against. Making sure all of our guys are in the right spots and pursuit [to the football] will be huge for us this week.”
The Varsity Wolves enter with quite a few seniors on the team. They boast 25 senior players, along with another six senior cheerleaders and four senior team managers who will all be acknowledged and celebrated in a ceremony before the game begins.
Coach Marcellus Holmes, who has coached many of these players over their years, said, “Most of these seniors I have coached and interacted with since the ninth grade. It’s been exciting to watch them grow and develop, not just as players but as young men. It’s been an honor and a privilege to coach a group like this.”
Don’t miss the Senior Night clash this Friday, Oct. 17, with Junior Varsity kicking off at 4:30 p.m., and Varsity kicking off at 7:30 p.m., with the Senior Night ceremony taking place at 6:30 p.m.
