On Tuesday morning, a gas leak at a home on the 100 block of Gadwall Street spurred local authorities to issue a shelter in place order for three residences. According to American Canyon Fire Department spokesperson Laura Provencher, the leak was caused by a construction crew accidentally hitting a “small line” at 10:51 a.m. The shelter in place order remained for 14 minutes.

Provencher said that the leak did not pose a threat, adding that “PG&E was on the scene shortly after [fire crews].” Provencher said that this type of leak “is very very rare — and it’s usually just when there’s a mistake.” Many homes along Gadwall Street were constructed in the early 2000s, and don’t have a history of recurring leaks.

The news startled Deanna Mitchell, a neighbor on Gadwall Street, who was out of her house when the leak was reported. But, she said, she was never notified directly by officials. “I didn’t get a notification … My son in Benicia texted me to say there’s a gas leak and it’s a shelter in place,” she told the Current

Today was the first reported gas leak in American Canyon in 2026, said Provencher. In 2025, there were 12 reported gas leaks, and three actual incidents.
