Wolves Football falls to California High School in NCS Division 2 playoff opener

The Varsity Wolves Football season ended after Friday night’s heartbreaking and dramatic 24-23 loss to the California High School Grizzlies. Each team made plays throughout the back-and-forth game that saw five lead changes over the course of thenight.
The exciting game opened with a botched kickoff return that handed the Wolves the football. After coming up with the great field position, however, the Wolves were unable to capitalize. Failing to convert on 4th down in the red zone with a fake field goal attempt gave the ball back to the Grizzlies.
Following three more drives without a score, the Grizzlies opened the scoring with a 66-yard touchdown pass from #9 Arjun Banerjee to #10 Luke Taylor.
The Wolves responded with a 38-yard kick return from #12 Webster Burks to set them up in good field position. The offense would take full advantage with a five-play, 40-yard drive capped off with a 28-yard touchdown run by team captain, #0 Andre Lopez.
Quickly getting the ball back with solid defensive play, the Wolves drove 72 yards down to the Grizzlies 9-yard line to get a chance at a field goal right at the end of the first half. Kicker #88 Christian Garcia made his first field goal attempt of the year, a 26-yard field goal, to take the lead 10-7 at the half.
The Wolves opened the second half by extending their lead with an 11-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, driven home with an 8-yard pass from #15 Kameron Hunter to #4 Callyn Brandt. The Grizzlies responded with a drive of their own that included a fake 4th-down punt, which cut the lead back down to just 3.
At 3:49 left in the game, the spectacle reached an all-time high with the Grizzlies blocking the Wolves’ field goal attempt and returning it all the way for a touchdown to take the lead 21-17.
The Wolves responded with an 80-yard drive that ended with Hunter scrambling and finding #5 Evan Paras in the corner of the endzone for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Wolves missedthe 2-point conversion, making the score 23-21.
With less than a minute to go, the Grizzlies got a good kick return to set them up at midfield. After multiple time-consuming plays, the Grizzlies threw an incomplete hail mary with 0 seconds on the clock, and a pass interference call set them up in field goal range. Kicker #19 Henry Dupin missed the attempt, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave him one more chance, which he converted for the game-winning field goal.
The Wolves ended the game with one of the best offensive showings they’ve had all season, putting up 463 yards of total offense, three touchdowns, and no turnovers. The passing game especially looked the best it has all year, with #15 Kameron Hunter completing 14 of 25 attempts for 148 yards and twotouchdowns.
The game will go down as one of the most exciting, wild and heartbreaking games in the history of American Canyon football. It marks an end to a historic season that saw the Wolves dominate opponents, week in and week out, with their dynamic offense and staunch defense.
