On Nov. 27, the American Canyon Safeway was hit with a bitter season’s greetings: Thieves made off with a truckload of 24 Christmas trees and two crates of wreaths from the store on American Canyon Road at Highway 29.

The incident, which American Canyon Police called a “Grinchy getaway,” was reported to the American Canyon Police Department Dec. 1, after security personnel reviewed footage from Safeway cameras that showed the suspects load trees and wreaths into a truck.

On Dec. 5, an American Canyon Police officer donned a Santa Claus suit and beard to arrest two Vallejo residents, a 29-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man.

Both suspects were released from Napa County Department of Corrections before 7 p.m. the night of Dec. 5. As the Grinch himself says: “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas … means a little bit more.”

According to a press release from American Canyon Police, “officers recovered all of the stolen trees and wreaths … The recovered Christmas trees were returned to Safeway.”
