American Canyon Girls Water Polo takes the VVAL League title

The American Canyon Varsity Girls Water Polo Team made history on Oct. 30 by going undefeated during the league season. The Wolves capped off the season with a dominant 8-2 victory over the Vintage Crushers.
The Crushers have been a team that gave the Wolves trouble year in and year out, not having lost a game to the Wolves at any point before this season. The two teams collided earlier this year as well, with the Wolves recording their first ever victory over the Crushers with the final score of 9-7.
The Wolves opened the scoring Thursday night with #24 and Team Captain Maia Medalle putting the Wolves up 1-0 just minutes into the game.
The second quarter the Wolves really started to get going, with #10 Isabella Marsden scoring a goal, and the team’s leading scorer, Team Captain #15 Isabella Mosing scored two more. Vintage managed to get on the board with a score, but going into halftime the Wolves were up 4-1.
The Wolves would finish out the game with another four goals, two from Isabella Mosing, one from #7 Gracie Garcia, and one more from Maia Medalle. Isabella Mosing would break her own record for goals scored in a single season, finishing the year with 84. Vintage would only score one more goal on the night, made by #2 and Team Captain Claire Lawrence.
Head Coach Andrea Cifelli was tremendously proud of her team after the game, stating, “It just shows hard work really does pay off. We’re just really proud of ourselves. These girls work hard year-round, not just in the fall, and it shows in the pool.”
She went on to talk about Isabella Mosing, the team’s stat leader in most of the offensive categories. “She really runs our offense and just tells the team where to go. She reads the pool really well and with that comes her high scoring. She’s really good at reading the goalie, the defense, and just knowing when is a good time to put the ball in the cage. Every year she tries to go higher than the previous.”
The defense for the Wolves was what really stood out throughout the game, managing to hold a Crushers offense that put up the most points in the league to just two points. On the defense, Coach Cifelli said, “They run a very heavy set offense so a lot of their scoring comes from their set player. The way we ran our defense was to have two people on that person at all times and recognizing that they don’t have a lot of outside shooters. Just being able to shut down that one shooter in the middle we were able to take over the game.”
The Wolves finish the season at 18-7, and 7-0 in league, and move on to the North Coast Section Championship Tournament, which begins Nov. 5. Their opponent as of time of writing is TBD, with the seeding being decided on Nov. 2.
