Our Summer Bite: An American Canyon Food Reflection

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We were up and down Highway 29, reporting all summer for The American Canyon Current. There were long days, short days, traffic and plenty of wetlands walks to keep us busy. After spending our summer with you all, we had the pleasure of eating all around town, and at various events, stuffing our faces with the local cuisine.

So here we are, at the end of summer, and we thought it’d be fun to share a few of our favorite American Canyon spots with you. (P.S. can’t decide where to eat? Spin the restaurant wheel.)

Tacos Michoacan
3945 Broadway

This was our very first stop when we started back in June. The friendly cashier recommended the quesabirria, and my goodness it was the best birria that I have ever had, (sorry East Bay) and alongside it came a delicious glass of purple jamaica to wash it all down. What a start to summer.

Xavey here: I’ll admit I have returned here more than once for this same combination, and I’m afraid I haven’t ordered anything else besides these two items in all of my trips here. So, if you really want to know what the rest of the food is like, you should check it out for yourself.

Le Paris Artisan and Cafe
3921 Broadway

We popped in here a couple of times. The first time we learned that we couldn’t order sandwiches after 3:30 p.m. (So, if you’re coming for a sando make sure to stop by before then!) Regardless, the pastries and sandwiches are delicious. This spot deserves the hype it gets. We highly recommend the morning bun (heated up) and the BLT sandwich on a croissant. The restaurant draws from French, Japanese and American cuisine to create their sweet and savory items and is the perfect place to stop for a familiar, favorite pastry or to try something new.

Diggity Dawgs
Food Truck

If only for a brief moment, this hot dog was the light of the party. The elusive Diggity Dawgs food truck appeared at American Canyon’s Juneteenth celebration and saved a famished reporter from eating their notebook. The dog was juicy, accompanied by a variety of self-serve toppings, with the option for homemade chili on top. The owners were a couple with a folksy attitude that takes years of kindness and patience to accumulate. It has no current sitting location that we were able to find, but if you ever see these dawgs out in the wild, tell them we sent you.

Cooked by Gio
Food Truck

Present at each and every Meet Me in the Street event this summer, Cooked by Gio is something special. A precise menu geared towards hearty proportions and home-cooked flavors, the window was always crowded with a long line of patient hungry people. Towards the end of the first Meet Me in the Street, we waited our turn to taste what everyone else was eating. All I can say is after two bites, that plate had made our week. The beef was cooked with a perfect tangy twang, and the secret lumpia was a perfect addition to an already stacked line-up of treats. The duo, Gio and Karla, write on their website that their mission is to spread awareness of just how good Filipino food really is, and to introduce themselves and their food to new faces and across new cities. Mission accomplished.

Chicken Guy
200 American Canyon Road

If you’re looking for some crunchy and flavorful fried chicken, then Chicken Guy is your spot! The restaurant offers things like combo meals, sandwiches, chicken tenders and salads. We found ourselves fans of the regular chicken tenders and the variety of dipping sauces to choose from when you order and had to go back for more tenders a couple of days after we initially tried the spot.

LASO Authentic Nepalese Cuisine
101 Antonina Ave Suite 5,

This is another one of our favorite spots this summer! Oftentimes, restaurants that say they’re Nepalese will end up serving more Indian-style dishes, but not Laso! Laso means it when they say they’re offering traditional Nepalese-inspired food. Service and food were great. We recommend the mango lassi to drink, the Brussels sprouts, the riki kur, the momo platter and the chicken Thali.

Kob’s Kitchen
3466 Broadway

Another surprise from Meet Me in the Street. During a routine day of reporting, we got hungry for a sandwich – but not just any sandwich, a Kob’s Kitchen banh mi. Needing something that combined sandwich and culture, we ventured to the window of Kob’s Kitchen’s food truck. There, a Lao banh mi was ordered and delivered to us with impeccable speed and precision. The bread was soft and the meat well-seasoned. Combined with the fresh accoutrements, the sandwich was enough to satisfy two people for half the price of a typical two-person meal. Upon writing this, we must consider that Kob’s Kitchen has a spot right off Highway 29 in American Canyon, so for those of you who missed them at Meet Me in the Street, there’s still hope for you.

Thus concludes our review of the many, many different places we enjoyed meals in American Canyon over the summer, and the list shouldn’t end there.
